CMS to accelerate Medicare access to breakthrough medical devices

CMS proposes RAPID device coverage pathway to sync evidence with FDA, shorten Medicare timelines, and boost early collaboration with manufacturers.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued a proposed procedural notice outlining a new Medicare coverage pathway intended to speed beneficiary access to certain FDA‑designated Breakthrough Devices.

The RAPID coverage pathway was first announced jointly by CMS and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in April 2026.
